Coaching Staff

Joe Martin
Head Men's Lacrosse Coach

Joe Martin began as the Skidmore College head men's lacrosse coach prior to the 2019 season.

The 2024 Thoroughbred team under Martin won its first eight games of the year to set a program record for consecutive games won to begin a season, as well as the overall win-streak record of nine dating back to the final contest of the 2023 season. The team was ranked 20th in the USILA Poll on March 4. The early season featured dramatic wins over NESCAC foes in Bates and Trinity. Skidmore also won a one-goal game on the road at Clarkson on March 30. At season's end, Brian Gonsalves '25 and David Koffler '26 represented the team on the All-Liberty League Second Team.

In 2023, Martin led the resurgent Thoroughbreds to a 10-6 record and the program's first double-digit win total since 2011 and the fourth overall. Skidmore finished 3-4 in the highly competitive Liberty League to finish in a three-way tie for fourth place. Skidmore earned dramatic Liberty League victories, all at home, over Clarkson, Ithaca, and Vassar. At the conclusion of the season, Charlie McFadden '24, Max Heberlein '25, and Collin Kuester '25 garnered All-Liberty League recognition.

In 2022, just Martin's second full season, Skidmore got off to a hot start and four straight non-league wins got the Thoroughbreds votes in the USILA Division III Poll. Paul Heffernan '23 earned All-Liberty League Honorable Mention honors at season's end.

The Thoroughbreds were off to a 3-2 start with 19.33 goals per game in their wins when the 2020 season was cut short.

Skidmore won four games in Martin's first year at the helm of the program in 2019. Logan Hart '19 and Alex Miller '21 represented Skidmore on the All-Liberty League list.

Prior to arriving in Saratoga Springs, Martin served for six seasons on the staff at the University of North Carolina. He was the Director of Lacrosse Operations at UNC from November 2013 to August 2016 before being promoted to assistant head coach. He worked primarily with the defensive unit as well as UNC's face-off men and wing play. In Martin's first season as a member of the coaching staff, the Tar Heels won the ACC Tournament championship while earning their ninth successive NCAA tournament bid.

In his role as operations director, Martin oversaw all game and practice film responsibilities, supervised the team managers, oversaw equipment ordering and distribution, arranged team travel and meals and helped operate youth and high school clinics.  During his tenure, Carolina won the NCAA championship in 2016 while also earning bids to the tournament in the previous two seasons.  The 2016 team also won the ACC regular-season championship.  Carolina's record over his three seasons as operations director was 35-15.

Martin earned his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from Western New England University in Springfield, Mass., in May 2012.  He had a major in finance and a minor in economics. After graduating, Martin stayed on at WNEU for a year as an assistant men's lacrosse coach before moving to Chapel Hill in November 2013. Martin played his college lacrosse at his alma mater from 2009-12.  He was a first-team All-Conference selection in 2011 and 2012.  As a senior, he was named both ECAC All-New England and NEILA All-New England.
